Sunderland are reportedly ready to launch a bid to sign Wolves’ highly-rated striker Steven Fletcher, according to Mirror Football.
The Scotland international has proved that he is good enough to cut it in the Premier League over his stints at Burnley and Molineux, and has bagged ten goals this season, including a brace against The Black Cats back in December.
However, with the Midlands club looking like a sure thing for demotion to The Championship, interest in Fletcher is set to be ramped up.
The attacker joined Wolves for a fee of £7 million, but it is believed that the Wearside club will try to drive a hard bargain for the Scot.
Martin O’Neill admitted that he wants to strengthen his squad come the summer to give a fresh impetus.
“I’m going to have to look at strengthening the squad,” he admitted after a lull in form.
“In the last couple of games we might be able to look at some of the younger players and see how that works out, so we have a viewpoint on them for the summertime.
“But I still feel we need to strengthen.”
Aston Villa defender Carlos Cuellar, who is a free agent in the summer, and Keith Andrews, who is on a short-term deal at West Brom, are rumoured to be targets also.
