da apostebet: Paul Robinson was full of praise for Ciaran Clark after his performance against Chelsea, as reported by Football Insider.
What did he say?
da pinup bet: Chelsea had 70% of the game’s possession, 10 corners and ended up taking 12 shots, but were still unable to get the ball past Martin Dubravka.
This offers an indication of just how resolute the Magpies were in their defending, which will have made it feel even sweeter when Isaac Hayden’s header went past Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Robinson was asked by Football Insider whether he thinks Clark deserves more credit after the game, to which he replied: “Yeah, he goes under the radar, he’s a no-nonsense defender and I like him.
“He’s 30-years-old now, he’s been around a while, he’s done well at Newcastle and Villa, and he’s a no-nonsense defender who did really well against Chelsea.
“Probably his best performance, he’s a player Steve Bruce can certainly rely on.”
A reliable presence
Clark showed the reliability that Robinson mentions in his defensive play against Frank Lampard’s team.
The 30-year-old was successful with two of his three attempted tackles, one interception and seven clearances – with only Jamaal Lascelles exceeding the latter number.
He won one of his two aerial duels, while even completing the one dribble that he attempted during the game.
Clark hasn’t exactly been a regular this season, making 11 Premier League starts, but the Republic of Ireland international’s usefulness has been evident whenever he has got onto the pitch.
Who the heck is that?! Can you name all 25 of these obscure Newcastle signings…
He has got on the scoresheet twice, but looking at his defensive statistics, Clark averages 1.2 tackles, 0.7 interceptions, 5.6 clearances and 1.1 blocks per game.
This offers an indication of how telling his contributions can be for a side that has kept six clean sheets so far this season.
His influence at Newcastle may be understated, going under the radar, but that does not detract from how important they are.
Meanwhile, it has been suggested that Newcastle must turn down the chance to sign a Premier League striker…
