da aviator aposta: The season came to its climax last weekend with Oxford United in no way threatening to take that final playoff spot held by Crewe Alexandra. United needed to win to stand any chance of claiming the last spot but sadly suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Port Vale.
With that the season was over and manager Chris Wilder wasted no time in starting on next seasons preparations, as within a few days the players on the final year of their contracts learnt their future.
There weren’t any big shocks as only Asa Hall, Adam Chapman and Wayne Brown were offered new deals. One player who will be sadly missed is the veteran midfielder Paul Mclaren, a fan favourite who started the season in top form, but has ended with a string of injury problems. This coupled with the consistency of the Supporter’s Player of the year Andy Whing has meant Mclaren’s opportunities were limited.
Many U’s fans have also questioned the release of Oli Johnson, however he hasn’t always had the best of times at the club and its understandable why Wilder deemed him surplus to requirements. Johnson’s season has been very hot and cold after joining in the January transfer window, with an all time high for Oxford fans in the home fixture against rivals Swindon Town. He grabbed a goal to help calm the nerves of United fans in an intense game at the Kassam Stadium. The trouble is moments like that have been few and far between for Johnson, who has since found himself mostly on the bench for the latter part of the season and failed to make an impact in a lot of games.
Overall the decisions made by Wilder have been the right ones, as Hall and Chapman can be a big part of the club next year and Brown will once again provide solid cover for Ryan Clarke.
The rest of the released list had no real shocks as Anthony Tonkin, Mark Wilson and youngster Aaron Woodley were told they would not be offered new deals. Scott Rendell, Cristian Montano and Dean Morgan have all gone back to their clubs after their stints on loan. Rendell had a decent run and did well up front while Montano took a while to settle but eventually started to have some good games. However Morgan had the most notable stay at Oxford splitting opinions of the fans with his undoubted ability, but lethargic approach to games.
So with his squad cut down to size Wilder now has the job of finding new recruits over the summer to ensure success next season for the U’s.
