da 888: According to The Sun, Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has £80m to spend when the January transfer window opens for business.
What’s the story?
da wazamba: Mourinho has not exactly been short of spending power since arriving at United, but it is understood that the Portuguese is still intent on splashing the cash as he looks to turn the Red Devils into a team capable of winning the Champions League.
It is no secret that the United boss wanted to sign a fourth player in the summer, with Inter Milan’s Ivan Perisic the one that got away following the arrivals of Romelu Lukaku, Victor Lindelof and Nemanja Matic.
According to The Sun, Mourinho met with United chiefs last week, and he was informed that £80m would be available to spend at the start of 2018.
There is a reason why so few major deals take place in the winter window, but with United currently competing on all fronts, Mourinho might be tempted to bring in a couple of new players next month.
Who could arrive at Old Trafford in January?
It would not be realistic to expect United to pursue a deal for Real Madrid’s Gareth Bale in the January transfer window, but there are a couple of deals that could take place.
Danny Rose has been widely tipped to leave Tottenham Hotspur in January, and it is understood that United would be able to sign the left-back if they came up with an offer in the region of £45m.
Schalke 04 midfielder Leon Goretzka has also been strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford as the German runs down his contract.
It is not against all possibilities that Mourinho could look to sign a new wide player next month, but with his leading targets – Bale and Antoine Griezmann – not available in January, the United manager might well save the cash for next summer.
