As the year of the Euro’s is now just a few days away, the FA will be getting to the business end of their search for Fabio Capello’s successor. Harry Redknapp is widely thought of as being the clear favourite to take up the role but there are certainly a number of obstacles to get over before any decision is made.
West Ham manager Sam Allardyce reignited his desire for the job over the Christmas period after narrowly missing out last time.
“It just depends on how the situation lies with the FA. They’re the ones that draw up the shortlist,” Allardyce told Soccer AM.
“I was pretty close last time, whether or not that will be the case this time we’ll have to wait and see. I’ve always said that you have to be flavour of the month when that job comes around. You have to be on top of your job and if that’s the case and I’m doing well for West Ham, then you can be put in the frame for that position.”
The majority of supporters that follow the England side will be praying that an Englishman is given the chance to manage their nation, but are there any candidates that fit the bill completely. Allardyce does not play the sort of football that England fans want to see, but his teams do have a good win percentage. The fact that Capello is a foreign manager has definitely affected his relationship with everyday supporters and so the FA will certainly be looking at that ahead of the World Cup qualifiers that start at the beginning of the 2012-2013 season.
Surely if there is not a suitable Englishman, Trevor Brooking and co should not hire someone for the sake of their nationality? There are plenty of foreign managers that could improve our side and they must be taken into account.
Another thing that the FA has got to think long and hard about is the managers’ history and ability when it comes to handling ‘big-time’ players that often step out of line. This year Wayne Rooney, John Terry and Ashley Cole have all given Capello problems with their attitudes and incidents that have occurred in the media.
No Englishmen has got enough experience in dealing with these sorts of situations, but the likes of Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger certainly do. The respect that the players would have for the before-mentioned duo would be extraordinary and is something that could take a good team to the next level.
As certain players are ageing rapidly in the Premier League, will the new boss have the bottle to drop the ‘superstars’ that are no longer at the top of their game? I would put forward the case that Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and Rio Ferdinand all don’t currently deserve a place on the plane to Ukraine and Poland, let alone after that! Redknapp, Wenger and Mourinho would certainly not hesitate in doing so but would the other candidates follow suit. The likes of Stuart Pearce, Alan Pardew and Allardyce do not have the reputation that would strike fear into players ahead of international duty.
As you can probably tell I feel that Redknapp is the best bet for an Englishman to take over, but why would he leave Spurs in the great position that they could well be in six months time? A pending court date early next year and the lack of ‘big club’ management could both be a worry. Mourinho wants to return to England and is undoubtedly one of the top managers in the world with a stunning record. Wenger must be realising his time at Arsenal should not last much longer and would play the sort of football that England supporters would love.
Allardyce, Pardew, Roy Hodgson and Guus Hiddink are amongst the other contenders but the FA have a huge decision to make in the next few months in order to give an improving, young England side the best possible chance of winning their second World Cup when they head to Brazil in 2014.
Who do you feel should be the next England manager?
